Hide Handling

Please treat your deer and moose hides carefully.
Remove as much flesh as possible.
When transporting the hide, use a cardboard box or burlap bag.

Remember decay can begin almost immediately. Preserve the hide by rubbing fine non-iodized rock salt  (2-4 lb. for deer and 4-8 lb. for moose) into the flesh side of the hide.

Do not make cuts or nicks in the hide when skinning.

Do not put the hide in plastic. Even when salted, the hide will decay if no air reaches it.

Only freeze hides that will be home tanned, and not turned in to a depot.

Spoiled hides will not be accepted.

For more information, talk to your Depot operator about the treatment of hides.

Thank you for your cooperation.
